Creating a League

Public vs. Private Leagues

How the Private and Public settings work and how people join each kind of league.

What's the difference between Private and Public?

When you create a league you choose whether it's Private or Public. Once the league has launched, you can change this from Edit league (the league's ⋮ menu) in one direction only: a Public league can become Private at any time, but a Private league can't become Public.

  • Private — Your league won't be listed publicly on Music League, so nobody can find it by browsing. You invite people yourself:
    • From within the app (they will get a notice on their home page and can join without your approval), or
    • By sharing the league link on social media, text, email, etc. Anyone joining that way will need your approval to officially join the league. This helps keep your private league private — a stray share doesn't let in someone you didn't expect.
    • Make sure your settings allow you to receive notifications from Music League so you see the requests.
  • Public — Your league is listed publicly on Music League. Anyone can discover it and join instantly, no matter how they found it (assuming there are spots left in the league). You can also invite people intentionally:
    • Directly through the app (they will get a notice on their home page and can join immediately), or
    • By sharing the league link on social media, text, email, etc. They can join without your approval.

Other differences?

Public leagues are limited to 20 rounds. Private leagues have no round limit. That's why a league can only be changed from Public to Private after launch, and why a league with more than 20 rounds can't be made Public until it is down to 20.

All other League Admin functions are the same.

This is an official Music League account.
